The Truth About KPop Demon Hunters
A few months ago, KPop Demon Hunters entered my world.
And about a billion other people as well, as I realised in the weeks that ensued.
From child to teenage sibling to parent, it has become a staple with its songs being played and sung everywhere.
For those of you unfamiliar with the title, it is an animated movie on Netflix.
In fact, KPop Demon Hunters has become Netflix's most-watched film ever, and is inspired by Korean mythology and folklore.
In short, the story focuses on three young women.
They are part of a tradition. In every generation, a trio is chosen.
Publicly they masquerade as singers in a pop group.
Behind the scenes they battle evil.
Through their music, their fans are inspired by love, positivity and unity, and the resultant collective energy creates a protective barrier around the world that banishes evil - the Honmoon.
This is their mission - restore the Honmoon.
Their enemy is an all powerful entity that feeds on human energy and wants our souls.
Its army comprises demons - people that have strayed from the light onto a path of darkness, and are now controlled through their shame -
- continuously made to relive each mistake they have made.
The more they doubt and fear, the more they feed their master, and the greater its’ power becomes.
One of the demons forms a friendship with the lead heroine who has a secret past herself, and through their shared circumstances, they perceive their freedom and realise the truth.
That they are controlled by their secrets. Their doubts or the shame that they hide hold them back and give evil power over them.
At the climax of the film the group of female singers are splintered, but they come to realise that evil cannot be beaten by exclusion, only through acceptance and compassion.
For themselves and others.
Each act of kindness, love and unity, combats evil and negativity.
Each act of anger, aggression and hatred fuels it.
I am not going to spoil it further for you.
In addition to being a beautifully animated movie, and having one of the best soundtracks ever, it is a great film to watch.
But I really felt I needed to share the truth of the movie.
I find it extremely moving because of that truth.
When we give into our doubts and fears, we are powerless.
We give them control over us.
But no matter how far we have travelled down a path of darkness, there is always a way back.
Don’t let doubts, regrets or shame hold you back.
We have all, without exception, made mistakes.
The only path is to accept your mistakes and learn from them.
Those who cannot, enslave themselves.
“We can’t fix it if we never face it.
Let the past be the past til it's weightless.”
