Mint Addition
I have always loved mint sweets, and have consumed more extra strong mints than I would like to admit to. And, after a quick Google search, it seems I am not the only one who would confess a mint addition.
I love everything about mint, the flavour, the decongestant quality, and the freshness that it brings to my system.
That being said, peppermint sweets and shop bought mint mouthwash are items I prefer not to consume anymore.
But the craving remains!
This weekend I believe I have found a solution.
I keep a good stock of peppermint essential oil and use it to make my own mouthwash.
So I have started adding a few drops of peppermint oil to a glass of water.
The result is I am drinking more water (always good) and retain a fresh, mint flavour in my mouth.
It has satisfied my craving.
I wanted to share it here, but there are, as with most essential oils, some cautions.
The NHS list the potential side effects of ingesting peppermint essential oil as follows:
Mild side effects and do not affect everyone:
Heartburn
Indigestion
Itching or skin irritation
Headaches
There are also some more serious side effects that while rare need to be mentioned.
Stop taking peppermint oil and call your doctor straight away if you:
have an itchy and widespread skin rash
have a slow heartbeat (bradycardia) – you may feel very tired or lightheaded
have muscle shakes
feel dizzy, which may also happen if you've had alcohol
In rare cases, it's possible to have a serious allergic reaction (anaphylaxis) to peppermint oil.
There are other risks of using essential oil, externally or internally, that everyone needs to be aware of. As an example, many essential oils are unsafe for pregnant women with some not recommended for women who are breast feeding. Full safety guidelines can be found here.
