Due Care and Attention

I had a gruelling day yesterday.

And gave too much of myself trying to combat it.

The result was by late afternoon I was drained and struggling to pick myself back up.

But during a trip to the shop, I struck up a conversation with a stranger that turned me around completely.

I often find that to be the case.

Just sharing a brief interchange with another human being can erase so much negativity.

It reinforces our self worth and creates a sense of acceptance and belonging.

And what made it all the more powerful was its' authenticity.

The lady I spoke to was completely genuine in her interest in engaging in conversation.

I left the shop feeling lifted and lighter.

The impact of the days' events erased.

It made me consider how important it is to be authentic in all of our interactions.

Giving due care and attention to communication deepens its' impact.

How often are our exchanges rushed?

Not through lack of care, but through lack of focus, or through doubt, or fear.

I have a little experiment for you.

Take one day and make a conscious effort to be totally present and committed to every communication you make.

Take the time to consider your words and actions.

And give your full attention to the exchange.

Without preconception of your audience's intent.

Actively listen to what they are saying.

And if in doubt, make no assumptions, ask for clarification.

There is no need to rush.

Then, note how it makes you feel by the end of the day.

It occurs to me that the greatest gift we can give another human being, and ourselves, is due care and attention.

Focus on the light, always.
